OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work To Take On Claude Cowork

OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.6, its latest flagship family of AI models, alongside ChatGPT Work. The new AI-powered workspace model combines coding, research, document creation and workflow automation.
The launch comes amid increasing competition in enterprise AI. OpenAI’s new model takes on Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google’s Gemini for Workspace and Amazon Q Business in the enterprise AI market.
It must be noted that OpenAI delayed the public release of GPT-5.6 after consulting the US government over cybersecurity and national security concerns. As per reports, the US government asked the IPO bound AI major to initially limit access of the model to a small group of government-approved users.
As per OpenAI, it briefed government officials on GPT-5.6 and restricted access to trusted partners during the review. Subsequently, the wider rollout began after additional testing by the US Center for AI Standards and Innovation.
The phased rollout follows a similar approach taken by Anthropic for its latest AI models, which also faced temporary restrictions before a broader release.
What Is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work combines ChatGPT with OpenAI’s coding tool, Codex, allowing users to create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, websites and software from a single interface.
The platform can also automate browser tasks and execute multi-step workflows independently.
It includes Scheduled Tasks, allowing projects to continue even when users are away. Importantly, the platform can monitor applications such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, update documents and notify users of important changes.
“With Codex technology built in, ChatGPT can now move beyond answering questions to getting real work done across web, mobile and desktop,” OpenAI said.
ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, which OpenAI said delivers improvements in reasoning, coding, scientific problem-solving and agentic capabilities. The model family includes Sol, Terra and Luna, giving users a choice between performance, speed and cost.
Users can also adjust the model’s reasoning effort, including an Ultra mode for more demanding tasks.
OpenAI added that GPT-5.6 is now the preferred model powering Microsoft 365 Copilot.
The company said the latest models are faster, cheaper and more widely available than competing offerings, as businesses look for AI tools that can automate increasingly complex workflows at a lower cost.
GPT-5.6 is rolling out across ChatGPT, Codex and the OpenAI API, starting with Pro, Enterprise and Edu users before expanding to Plus and Business subscribers. API pricing starts at $1 per one million input tokens for Luna, $2.50 for Terra and $5 for Sol.
The launch comes amid growing enterprise adoption for AI. Amid the ongoing AI boom, more businesses are incorporating AI to automate or smoothen their business functions. Overall, India’s enterprise AI market is forecast to grow more than sixfold to $71 Bn by 2030 from $11 Bn in 2025.
