Uber Takes Bike Services To 100 More Cities Amid Intense Competition

Ride-hailing major Uber has announced the expansion of its bike taxi service, Uber Bike, to 100 cities in India. Overall, the ride-hailing major claims to be present in more than 220 Indian and is extensively looking to deepen its reach in smaller towns while strengthening its position in the country’s two-wheeler mobility market.
Uber Bike is now operational in 18 states and one union territory, with cities including Jammu, Tirunelveli, Silchar and Jamnagar.
Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari welcomed the expansion and urged states to adopt the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025 to facilitate bike taxis and other new mobility services.
“The Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025 provide states with a clear path to embrace bike taxis and other new mobility solutions and I urge states to adopt the Guidelines and enable affordable first- and last-mile connectivity for their citizens while boosting livelihood creation at scale,” Gadkari said.
To note, bike taxis have been a hot point of contention across states in the country. While Goa, Uttar Pradesh have officially permitted this taxi service, other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka are yet to adopt that way.
The expansion comes months after Uber infused about ₹2,921 Cr through an equity issue in its India business amid increased competitive pressure. Bike taxis were popularised by Uber competitor Rapido, which is now present in around 400 cities and currently holds nearly 60% market share in the segment.
For Uber, the expansion disclosures comes shortly after long serving CEO Prabhjeet Singh stepped down as head of Uber India. He is set to join OpenAI as managing director for India operations in September.
Uber’s India business is currently led by Rishant Ghosh, director – consumer & growth, Uber India and South Asia.
For FY25, Uber India Systems reported a net loss of ₹1,511 Cr, nearly 15 times the previous year’s loss, while gross revenue remained largely flat at ₹2,604 Cr. The company has yet to file its FY26 financial results.
