Amazon Layoffs: At Least 100 Employees In India Hit By Latest Global Job Cuts

Ecommerce giant Amazon has reportedly laid off at least 100 employees in India as part of its latest global job cuts.
Citing sources, ET reported that the affected employees in India were primarily from retail and customer service functions.
Globally, fewer than 1,000 employees were affected, Business Insider reported.
The cuts spanned customer service, selling partner support, and engineering roles within Amazon’s Stores business, which oversees its main ecommerce operations. Employees in India, the US, and the UK were among those affected.
Responding to Inc42’s queries, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company had eliminated roles as part of changes to its Stores business.
“We’re always looking at our team structures to ensure we’re best set up to move fast as we innovate for customers. We’ve adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities. As part of these changes, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles, and we’re committed to supporting affected employees through their transition,” the spokesperson said.
However, Amazon did not disclose how many employees were affected in India or provide details of the support being offered to them.
The layoffs coincide with the start of Amazon’s Great Indian Festival sale, which opened to all customers yesterday.
Further Cuts After Two Major Rounds
The latest layoffs follow two major rounds of workforce reductions that affected Amazon’s India operations.
In January 2026, Amazon laid off more than 500 employees across its India offices, with multiple sources estimating the number at 500-700. Technology and human resources teams were among the worst affected, with software development engineer roles accounting for the highest number of layoffs.
Those cuts were part of a global restructuring exercise affecting approximately 16,000 roles. Amazon said at the time that it was reducing organisational layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.
Earlier, in November 2025, more than 1,000 employees were laid off in India, with sources estimating that the total could reach 1,500.
Prime Video, people experience and technology, Q&A devices, retail stores, and Amazon Web Services were among the worst-hit divisions. The cuts affected mid-senior and senior employees across Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, with sources saying that some verticals had lost entire teams.
Alongside these workforce reductions, Amazon is increasing investment in infrastructure. The company plans a record $220 Bn in capital expenditure in 2026, covering data centres, chips, and other infrastructure, with the majority supporting AWS and AI.
CEO Andy Jassy said during Amazon’s second-quarter earnings call that higher memory costs had pushed the estimate up from $200 Bn.
In India, Amazon announced an additional $13 Bn investment in AI and cloud infrastructure by 2030 in June, taking its total investment commitment across businesses in the country to $48 Bn.
The company also reportedly plans to invest $3 Bn in its quick commerce business, Amazon Now, by 2030 to expand its dark store network, strengthen inventory management, deploy AI tools, and widen its product mix.
