Sarvam Takes On Claude, Codex With Cheaper, India-Hosted Coding Agent

Amid the string of announcements made during its Epoch 2026 conference, AI unicorn Sarvam unveiled a new AI coding agent for engineering teams — Sarvam Code.
Pitched as an agent that builds sustainable code for the long run, Sarvam Code breaks down the coding workflow into three specialised agents — a planner, a worker and a verifier.
Cofounder Pratyush Kumar said the architecture addresses one of the biggest weaknesses of open-source models — reliably determining when a coding task is complete.
“IT services companies are buying licenses from Anthropic and so on because they want to do coding,” Kumar said. “We showed that not only is it hosted in India with our own models, but actually is very competitive. The same number of tasks getting solved on Sarvam Code will be cheaper.”
Using Terminal-Bench 2.1, a leading benchmark for evaluating AI coding agents, the startup showed that Sarvam Code spent about $2 for every task it solved, while similar coding agents from Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex ranged from $4.1 to $27.8 per solved task. Besides, the startup also showed that its offering could outperform similar offerings from Claude and ChatGPT.
Besides, Sarvam said that pricing follows completed work. “Retries and dead ends are not billed,” as per the startup’s disclosure.
Sarvam Code is rolling out in early beta under the company’s Indus platform, which uses a unified credit system across its agentic AI products.
The coding agent launch is among a plethora of announcements coming from the recently minted unicorn. Here’s a brief look at some of the key highlights from day one of the event:
