Meta India Head Named In FIR Over Objectionable Posts Targeting PM Modi

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered an FIR against operators of several Facebook and Instagram accounts for allegedly posting morphed and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Meta’s India head, Arun Srinivas, has also been named in the FIR for allowing objectionable content on the company’s platforms, according to ANI.
The complaint was filed by T Saikiran Goud, a social media committee member of BJP Telangana, alleging that he came across several Facebook and Instagram reels and posts on July 29 that were derogatory towards PM Modi and could potentially harm national integrity.
Goud submitted 20 URLs of the alleged posts and urged the police to identify the individuals operating the accounts. He also sought action against Meta, alleging that the company allowed such content to remain on its platforms.
The complainant further requested authorities to preserve digital evidence, obtain account details from Meta and investigate whether the content spread misinformation, promoted hatred or created enmity.
Meta Faces Heightened Scrutiny
The development comes at a time when Meta is facing increased scrutiny from the Centre, especially after removing a post from PM Modi’s account.
Earlier this week, the government summoned Meta President of Global Affairs Joel Kaplan for the removal of the PM’s post. Following the takedown, Meta restored the post and said it was removed due to an error in its AI-powered moderation system.
The company subsequently submitted a written response to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), outlining enhanced safeguards for content posted by the prime minister and other prominent accounts.
According to PTI, Meta told the ministry that such posts will now undergo additional oversight and require approval from at least two senior executives before any moderation decision is taken. The company also expressed regret over the incident and outlined corrective measures.
However, the government has maintained that Meta’s explanation for the erroneous removal remains inadequate and has sought further details. Senior Meta executives are expected to meet MeitY officials in the coming days to explain the company’s content moderation framework.
