Spacetech startup Kepler Aerospace has raised $8 Mn (around ₹75.8 Cr) in a seed funding round led by Blue Ashva Capital and co-led by Finvolve, India Accelerator, and other investors. 

The round marks the Bengaluru-based startup’s first external fundraise since its inception in 2018.

Kepler will use the fresh capital to develop and deploy its space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, while expanding its mission operations and avionics-as-a-service businesses.

A key part of the funding will be used to launch its first six autonomous swarming ISR satellites under two iDEX contracts secured for India’s defence space ecosystem. The programmes have also received around $4 Mn in grants under iDEX.

ISR satellites monitor designated areas from space and collect information that can be used for defence and national security operations.

Kepler claims its proposed satellites will be capable of communicating with, assigning tasks to, and acting in coordination with one another in orbit without waiting for instructions from a ground station.

The startup said it aims to reduce the time taken to convert space-based data into actionable intelligence from months to minutes through these persistent ISR systems and its integrated mission infrastructure.

Kepler’s Space Infrastructure Play 

Founded by Navneet Singh and Kiran V Sharma, Kepler builds and operates infrastructure required across the lifecycle of a satellite mission.

The startup makes satellite avionics and subsystems, including onboard computers, power systems, radio frequency payloads, and communication and navigation modules. These are electronic systems installed inside satellites to control their operations, power supply, navigation, and communication.

It also provides ground station and mission operations services. These allow satellite operators to communicate with, track, control, and receive data from their satellites after they are placed in orbit.

Kepler’s third focus area is space-based intelligence, under which it plans to operate satellites that collect and process surveillance data for defence and national security applications.

In simple terms, the startup makes some of the electronic systems used inside satellites, provides the ground infrastructure required to operate them, and is now building its own satellites to collect defence intelligence.

Kepler said its mission operations platform serves nearly all Indian space companies and acts as the primary mission operator for several ISRO satellites.

The startup also claimed that it provides satellite communication, tracking, telemetry, command, and mission operations services through a network of more than 70 ground stations.

Over the next 12 to 24 months, Kepler will focus on deploying the satellites, expanding its mission operations and avionics-as-a-service businesses, and strengthening its engineering capabilities.

The startup is also moving to a new facility and plans to add 40 employees to its existing team.

India’s Spacetech Push

The fundraise comes as India’s private spacetech ecosystem expands beyond launch vehicles and satellites into areas such as space-based intelligence, defence applications, satellite subsystems, ground infrastructure, and mission operations.

The shift is already visible in the growing capabilities of Indian spacetech startups. In July, spacetech unicorn Skyroot Aerospace became the first private Indian company to place a rocket into orbit, with its Vikram-1 launch vehicle completing Mission Aagaman after lifting off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Meanwhile, Agnikul Cosmos onboarded former ISRO chairman S Somanath as an observer on its board as the startup prepares for its second space mission. The mission will involve recovering an orbital-class rocket booster and extending the rocket’s upper stage into an on-orbit platform.

At the heart of this push is India’s commercial spacetech market, which is projected to reach $77 Bn by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 26%.
