Fixing Instant Services’ Unit Economics

The battle for India’s instant home services is on. Players are clocking record orders, raising big bucks and chasing scale like nothing before. But what’s unfolding behind these vanity metrics is the fight to rein in burn per order, worker shortages and heavy fulfilment expenses.

Scale Meets Reality: Indian home services giants are no longer merely testing demand. Urban Company’s InstaHelp crossed 1 Lakh daily orders in August, while Snabbit claims 1.15 Lakh jobs per day. Another player Pronto is processing about 60,000 orders daily. Overall, the average monthly order frequency for these platforms has risen from 1-1.5 bookings earlier to 3.4-4 now.

The Density Moat: The emerging theme is to go deeper, not wider. By concentrating demand within tight neighbourhoods, platforms are reducing travel time, improving utilisation and lowering fulfilment costs. As a result, InstaHelp’s EBITDA loss per order declined 23% QoQ to ₹346 in Q1 FY27, while Snabbit’s burn per job fell 29% sequentially to below ₹250.

However, investors caution that some of this improvement reflects operating leverage rather than fundamental cost reductions.

The Profitability Test: Three factors will determine whether the category can become profitable: lower customer acquisition costs, higher worker utilisation and curbing labour costs. Industry watchers believe that players must also prove that customers can return without discounts, workers can complete more jobs within tighter clusters and labour supply can expand without higher payouts.

The Cross-Sell Pivot: But lower burn alone will not be enough. As per industry insiders, instant service providers must also increase customer spending through cross-sell services such as pet care, elderly assistance, repairs and subscriptions, while keeping acquisition costs under control.

As India’s instant home services ecosystem transitions to operational discipline, can platforms build the density, frequency and service breadth needed to deliver sustainable profits? Let’s find out…

From The Editor’s Desk

📡 Pixxel’s Spectral Upgrade

  • Seven years since its inception, Pixxel has come a long way. The startup today operates six Firefly satellites, serves customers across the globe and works with government agencies in India and the US.
  • The startup is now gearing up to demonstrate Honeybee, its next-generation satellite platform, later this year. The constellation will expand its visible and near-infrared bands to around 250, paving the way for more advanced industrial use cases.
  • Honeybee could widen Pixxel’s commercial market by adding short-wave infrared data, enabling deeper mineral exploration, more detailed soil analysis and improved greenhouse-gas tracking.

🚆 ixigo’s Profitable Q1 Run

  • The travel tech major’s net profit zoomed 81% YoY to ₹34.2 Cr in Q1 FY27 on the back of expanding margins, continued gains in market share, AI-led efficiencies and operating revenue rising 13% YoY to ₹356.8 Cr.
  • The relatively newer hotels business emerged as ixigo’s fastest-growing vertical during the quarter, while the bus vertical outgrew the broader market. However, the flights business was the largest contributor to ixigo’s GTV despite geopolitical tensions.
  • Alongside its financials, ixigo also announced the acquisition of an additional 11% stake in food delivery platform Zoop for ₹36.4 Cr. The OTA’s board also cleared an investment of ₹2.4 Cr in the company’s Singapore subsidiary.

🏦 Fisdom Founders To Exit Groww

  • The wealth management startup’s cofounders Subramanya SV and Anand Dalmia are set to exit the listed fintech major, after completing a planned one-year transition. This follows Groww acquiring Fisdom last year.
  • Groww is not keen on appointing external replacements for the cofounders. Instead, the listed major’s founders intend to work more closely with the newly-acquired business, while other senior executives from Fisdom will be elevated to other roles.
  • Groww acquired Fisdom last year in an all-cash deal at a valuation of about $150 Mn to scale its wealth management business, ‘W’. The acquisition brought over 150 wealth advisers, more than ₹10,000 Cr in AUM and specialised licenses into Groww’s fold.

💰 Solinas Integrity Bags $5.5 Mn

  • The robotics startup has raised around ₹52.4 Cr in its Series A1 funding round co-led by Mela Ventures and Hero Enterprise Family Office to expand its manufacturing capacity, build new products, strengthen its software stack and meet working capital needs.
  • Founded in 2018, Solinas builds a series of crawler robots to detect defects and leakages in water and sewer pipelines. With customers like Dubai Municipality, the startup now plans to deepen international presence and foray into sectors like oil and gas.
  • The fundraise comes as the Indian robotics ecosystem continues to see healthy adoption, driven by rapid industrial expansion, government incentives, rising VC funding and a distinct cost advantage for local research and prototyping.

📦 Shiprocket All Set For IPO

  • The logistics major has filed its RHP with SEBI to raise ₹1,617 Cr via its IPO, which will comprise a fresh issue of shares worth ₹885 Cr and an OFS component of up to ₹732 Cr.
  • The public issue will open for subscription on August 12 and close on August 14. It has fixed a price band of ₹92-97 per share for the public issue, valuing the company at around ₹7,000 Cr.
  • Founded in 2017, Shiprocket operates a full-stack ecommerce enablement platform, offering services like shipping, warehousing, payments and marketing. The startup’s top line rose 25% YoY to ₹2,024 Cr in FY26, while losses widened 6% YoY to ₹79.2 Cr.

🥗 Swiggy’s FY31 Roadmap

  • The foodtech major is banking on its affordable meals platform Toing and quick commerce business Instamart to achieve a consolidated adjusted EBITDA of ₹10,000 Cr by FY31.
  • Swiggy also projected an overall gross order value of ₹2.5 Lakh Cr by FY31, driven by sustained growth across food delivery, quick commerce, and dining-out. It plans to achieve this by driving monetisation via scale and focusing on affordability.
  • On the quick commerce front, Swiggy is targeting a GOV of ₹1.5 Lakh Cr for Instamart by FY31. The company also expects Instamart to continue scaling rapidly over the next five years while benefiting from higher operating leverage.

How Graduate Farmers Is Rethinking Poultry With AI

India’s poultry industry is growing rapidly. However, antibiotic overuse, expensive feed and disease outbreaks continue to squeeze farmers and raise public-health concerns. Graduate Farmers is trying to tackle this problem from the ground up with AI.

Farmer-First Model: Founded in 2022, Graduate Farmers supplies small poultry producers with chicks, antibiotic-free feed, training and technology support. It then buys back mature birds and connects them to markets, reducing the risks of procurement, production and sales for farmers.

The Feed Innovation: The Assam-based startup has developed an Azolla-based feed formulation designed to lower input costs while supporting antibiotic-free poultry rearing. It is also exploring Black Soldier Fly larvae as a sustainable feed source and sells chicks, ducklings, eggs, feed and nutritional supplements through WhatsApp.

The IoT Stack: Graduate Farmers has also built an IoT-based monitoring system that tracks temperature, humidity and ammonia levels inside poultry houses. This system helps farmers respond earlier without adding a heavy technology burden. Graduate Farmers is also developing low-cost egg incubators and digital support tools.

A Thriving Local Network: Graduate Farmers claims to have supported more than 8,000 farmers online and over 400 on the ground across Assam’s Barak Valley. It has also worked with roughly 1,000 farmers across Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi, with plans to expand beyond the state while strengthening local supply and market access.

As India’s poultry market scales, can Graduate Farmers make antibiotic-free production profitable for small farmers?
