The Indian spacetech ecosystem is entering its most critical phase yet. After years of experimentation and ambition, spacetech startups must now prove they are on a path to commercial viability.

Investors are already betting on this transition. According to Inc42’s data, homegrown spacetech startups have already raised $252.9 Mn so far this year, nearly double what the sector raised in 2025.

Leading the momentum is Skyroot Aerospace. The startup became India’s first spacetech unicorn in May after it raised a $60 Mn round. Subsequently, it was successful in becoming the first Indian private company to place a rocket into orbit with its Vikram-1 mission. It is now lining up a bigger $200 Mn round. 

Earlier this month, Temasek-backed hyperspectral imaging startup Pixxel’s $100 Mn Series C round made headlines as the single-largest funding round raised by a spacetech startup in India. 

So, why are spacetech startups suddenly the flavour of the season? A key reason is the deepening policy push. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) earlier this year began deploying capital from its ₹1,600 Cr Antariksh Venture Capital Fund. Similarly, the state-backed ₹1 Lakh Cr Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) fund also recently allocated nearly ₹834 Cr to spacetech startups in its inaugural cohort. 

The buzz around the sector hasn’t just been about money coming in, but real achievements too. 

GalaxEye recently became the first Indian startup to secure a US patent for its OptoSAR satellite imaging technology. Agnikul Cosmos also completed a test firing of its Agnite engine, which boasts India’s first semi-cryogenic engine and the largest 3D-printed single-piece rocket engine in the world. 

Despite this, finding commercial viability is a looming concern for many spacetech startups. In addition, there are concerns around the frothy spacetech valuations. Under the current scheme of things, can Indian spacetech startups convert milestones into scalable and sustainable business models?

This begs the question: can Indian spacetech startups convert milestones into scalable and sustainable business models?

What Are VCs Betting On?

Earlier this year, Union minister of state (MoS) Jitendra Singh pegged the size of India’s space economy at around $9 Bn and projected that it would grow to nearly $45 Bn over the next decade. Behind this projected market size is an entire value chain: 

  • First comes the infrastructure layer that enables launches, including ground stations, launch vehicles, and the components that act as inputs for the rockets
  • Then come payloads – the satellites and sensors that hitch a ride on the rocket and generate data from orbit
  • From there comes the ‘downstream’ data intelligence and applications layer, comprising analytics and services that process the raw data from the previous step. 

It is this ‘downstream’ layer that Viju George, a partner at Mela Ventures, believes has the most promise. “Revenue models in satellites tend to be very lumpy and capex-driven, whereas data streams tend to be high-margin recurring revenue,” he observed. 

The upstream input layer is relatively more commoditised, as per George. But that doesn’t mean it’s not investable. 

“If you’re able to take the shovels approach, where you provide the components to satellites like avionics, communication infrastructure, and others, that is a kind of a multipurpose play. With that positioning, you’re not really dependent on a single satellite brand winning or losing,” he added.

Ashish Taneja of GrowX Ventures, an early investor in Pixxel, also believes that the nascent earth observation segment is a huge market opportunity. He added that the infrastructure layer is a “big thing too” as it continues to be a supply-constrained market.

But have the potential and the promise of spacetech taken investors too far? 

The Gap Between Hype & Market Demand

The rapid influx of capital into the spacetech sector is creating concerns around valuations, market size and whether the demand required to justify these bets has materialised yet.

“I worry about the valuations because now somehow we are in the FOMO zone,” George said, adding that he is unsure whether the market is large enough to support current valuations. The risk, he said, is “whether you are paying a little bit more for market demand that is not yet evident.” 

The valuation question is especially pronounced for capex-heavy businesses, where large cheques are being signed based on potential future launch cadence and scale, even as India’s launch capacity is still developing.

Because of limited launch experience and deployments, investors are finding it tough to benchmark execution capability or predictable revenues. The growing number of startups is also raising the investment bar, with multiple ventures now attacking similar problems.

To achieve scale, spacetech startups will need to expand their base beyond government buying, which has, thus far, acted as an anchor customer. These emerging players will also need to tap into foreign sovereign buyers and commercial enterprises as well. 

But demonstrating competitive cost, reliability, performance and consistency will be key to competing in international markets. 

As such, GrowX’s Taneja remarks that “not many people will make the cut” in attracting sustained capital, predicting consolidation as startups expand beyond their initial products and become vertically integrated space infrastructure companies. Simply put, he believes that stronger players could eventually acquire or absorb smaller companies.

What Will It Take To Win Capital?

The first phase of Indian spacetech hinged on visions and ideas. But growing market maturity and an influx of new ventures have turned investor focus to identifying which businesses can turn technical breakthroughs into large, durable markets.

A startup may solve an extremely difficult engineering or deeptech problem, but that alone does not guarantee a scalable business.

“Early stage investors like to see milestones because we think they are the precursor to valuations and revenues. But once growth investors come in, they like to see tangible metrics,” said Mela Ventures’ George.

In 2018-19, investors were largely evaluating founder quality, technical capabilities, and whether building satellites and propulsion systems out of India was even possible. This is no longer the case. 

“I want a precise use case. I want clarity on the use case. I want a differentiated solution which is defensible in the long run,” said Taneja. 

Investors also want clarity on who will buy the product, how it will be used and what makes the offering difficult to replicate. Hence, established spacetech startups have more of an advantage now in attracting growth funding as they have a track record to show. 

Signs of market maturity are also evident with global investors now participating in larger rounds, while domestic growth-stage funds are also beginning to enter Series B and beyond. But the funding pool remains smaller, particularly for capital-intensive spacetech businesses that require significant funding before reaching scale.

This could make the public markets increasingly relevant to the sector’s long-term funding cycle. Once companies have spent years building technology, establishing revenues and reaching sufficient scale, public listings could provide another route to capital and liquidity.

For early investors, meanwhile, the long development cycle itself can create multiple opportunities for valuation repricing as spacetech startups move from technical milestones to commercial deployment.

Taneja cited a 17X outcome over around five years, following the sale of a small portion of GrowX’s stake during Pixxel’s recent $100 Mn fundraise.

Regardless, the investment thesis has evolved substantially from when the first spacetech startups created the market a decade ago. The real challenge now is not reaching the stars, but turning that journey into a stellar business.
