Claude Rolls Out India Pricing As Anthropic Bets Big On Its Second-Largest Market

Anthropic has introduced rupee-denominated pricing for its AI chatbot Claude in India, allowing users to pay for subscriptions in Indian rupees instead of US dollars as it deepens its presence in its second-largest market globally.
The move comes as global AI companies increasingly localise their offerings for India, where adoption of generative AI tools has surged among developers, startups, enterprises and students.
With an estimated 5.8% to 7.2% of Claude’s global usage, India is Anthropic’s second-largest market after the US, prompting the company to simplify payments for local users.
According to the updated pricing on Claude’s website, the Pro plan costs ₹2,000 per month when billed annually, while the Max plan starts at ₹11,999 per month. Team subscriptions begin at ₹2,399 per user per month and offer higher usage limits than the Pro plan. The prices are inclusive of GST, while Claude’s free tier will continue to be available.
Until now, Indian users were billed in US dollars, often requiring international cards for payments. The introduction of local pricing is expected to reduce payment friction and make subscriptions easier for both individual users and businesses.
The development comes as Anthropic expands its presence in India. Earlier this year, the US-based company opened its first India office in Bengaluru and appointed Irina Ghose as its managing director to lead local operations, enterprise partnerships and talent hiring.
The move also comes amid intensifying competition among AI model providers in India. Last year, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Go, a lower-priced subscription tier that debuted in India, alongside rupee-denominated pricing for its paid plans.
Google, Microsoft and other AI companies have also been expanding their India strategy through local partnerships, language support and enterprise offerings.
For Anthropic, the pricing update is part of a broader push beyond model launches. Over the past few months, the company has expanded Claude’s capabilities with products such as Claude Code, Cowork and Design, while competing more aggressively with OpenAI and Google for developers and enterprise customers.
Meanwhile, homegrown AI unicorn Sarvam already offers rupee-denominated API pricing, including a pay-as-you-go option and a Pro plan priced at ₹10,000.
