BigBasket Cofounders Hari Menon, Vipul Parekh Step Down From Executive Roles

Tata Digital-owned BigBasket cofounders Hari Menon and Vipul Parekh have stepped down from day-to-day operations and moved into board and mentorship roles. While Menon served as BigBasket’s CEO, Parekh looked after the marketing and finance functions of the ecommerce company.
The company has appointed former Amazon India’s former selling partner services’ director Amit Nanda as its new CEO. BigBasket said that Nanda played a pivotal role in building and scaling the company’s owned brands portfolio across categories during his near 12 year tenure at Amazon India.
At Amazon, Nanda held several leadership roles spanning marketplace, product, technology, and private brands. The IIM Ahmedabad alum was engaged with Hindustan Unilever before joining Amazon.
BigBasket was founded by Menon, Parekh, VS Ramesh, VS Sudhakar and Abhinay Choudhari in 2011. The company was acquired by Tata Digital in 2021. To note, Choudhari and Sudhakar have stepped away from the company since the acquisition.
The transition also comes months after reports suggested that the cofounders were in discussions with Tata Digital about stepping back from operational roles. At the time, Menon publicly denied reports that the company was looking for a new CEO.
The leadership change comes at a critical juncture for bigbasket. Amid the ongoing quick commerce boom, BigBasket has been battling slowing growth, mounting losses and intensifying competition from rivals such as Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart.
Its parent entity, Supermarket Grocery Supplies, reported a 42% jump in net loss to ₹2,006.8 Cr in FY25, while operating revenue declined 2% to ₹9,866.7 Cr. It is yet to reveal its financial performance for FY26.
Nanda will now be tasked with steering BigBasket’s next phase of growth, with a focus on quick commerce, private labels and broader digital commerce initiatives.
For Tata Digital, the appointment signals a shift from founder-led management to professional leadership at one of its most important consumer internet businesses.
With Menon and Parekh no longer involved in daily operations, BigBasket enters its first chapter without its founding team at the helm.
